CIVHC and CBGH Partner to Help Employers Reduce Health Care Costs

New Data Insights will Help Employers Identify Ways to Improve Care and Lower Costs for Employees

DENVER – August 9, 2017 – The Colorado Business Group on Health (CBGH) and the Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC) are partnering to provide new data and analytic support to employers across the state. By combining services, the two non-profit organizations intend to bolster the work of employers seeking to lower health costs and improve the health of their employees.
CIVHC and CBGH have collaborated for a number of years, however, this partnership marks the first formal agreement between the two organizations to combine data and analytic services. Synergistic goals to advance health care and support employers who can drive value into the system made this step a natural evolution for the two organizations.

CBGH has been providing education and analytic support to employers looking to change the trajectory of rising premiums and out of pocket expenses each year. However, data provided was limited to claims submitted from a small number of self-insured employers in their cohort. With a focus on supporting multiple stakeholders, including employers, with data and analytics from the Colorado All Payer Claims Database (CO ACPD), CIVHC is in a prime position to add additional insights to the data already being provided to employers by CBGH.

“Self-insured employers are in the driver’s seat when it comes to making positive changes in the health care system, but they need actionable information in order to steer in the right direction,” states Robert Smith, Executive Director for CBGH. “Our goal with this partnership is to illuminate new opportunities for employers to develop alternative payment systems and change benefit designs that encourage high value, not high volume care.”

As part of the new partnership, CIVHC will be adding self-insured employer claims to the CO APCD that were previously submitted to CBGH. Employers with data in the CO APCD will have the opportunity to evaluate themselves across other self-insured employers as well as the fully insured market, equipping them with insights never before available.

“Data from the CO APCD offers the employer community new ways to understand how they compare to the rest of the market,” remarks Ana English, President and CEO of CIVHC. “As opposed to seeing only their slice of the pie, employers will have access to actionable data and analysis across the whole system. This will help them and their employees identify lower cost, higher quality health care options.”

Employers working with both organizations will experience additional value-add benefits including comparing payments to Medicare to establish fair market pricing, the ability to predict cost and quality through business intelligence data to reduce complications and lower costs, and access to support from experienced health care professionals working with Colorado employers.
